Ecovat

The Netherlands wants to completely transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy. This should already be the case by 2050. The goal is to emit 2050-80% less CO95 by 2. To achieve this, laying solar panels and building wind turbines – no matter how many there are – is not enough. Energy will have to be stored for the moments when the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow.
This is what Ecovat does.

The Ecovat System has four advantages:

  1. Long-term storage over the seasons
  2. Short-term storage, for example from day to night
  3. Delivery of system services such as flexibility and capacity services
  4. Avoiding costs for peak power stations

The large storage capacity and efficiency of the Ecovat System make it possible to store energy across the seasons. This creates a balance between supply and demand of sustainable energy. The Ecovat System has no CO2 emissions. Energy is stored in the form of heat and cold.

Ecovat; Energy storage and distribution, crucial elements of energy transition.
Ecovat makes a sustainable system that stores and distributes energy in the form of heat and cold.

The Ecovat System

In a technical explanation, Ecovat systems are thermal-hydraulic energy storage systems, gigantic underground thermoses, with associated heat collectors and heat generators complete with hydraulic transport pipes and control software.

The visual below provides an image of the Ecovat System in a neighborhood.

In times of wind and solar surplus, the water is heated; When it's cold you can heat your house with it. The water remains hot for at least six months and it is suitable for residential blocks of 500 houses or more.

Ecovat only uses sustainable energy sources (solar and wind) when they produce abundantly and stores the energy to meet the heating demand of residential areas. It is the first product that can store heat at high temperatures for long periods, with very limited energy loss. The Ecovat System supplies heat for 750 to 8000 homes or other buildings.

The technique

In short, the Ecovat consists of a large barrel in which heat of different temperatures is stored in different layers. A heat pump ensures that the stored heat can heat buildings. The heat is stored up to 90° C in the barrel. This heat is stored efficiently: over a period of 6 months there is only approximately 10% loss of heat. Heat stored in the summer can be used in the winter. In summer, houses can also be cooled via the Ecovat System.

Markten

Ecovat focuses on the market for sustainable heating and cooling systems for homes and buildings

Climate changes, international climate agreements and the proposed termination of gas extraction in Groningen have resulted in a major revolution in thinking about the energy system of the future in the Netherlands.

Heat represents more than 50% of the energy needs of households in the Netherlands. Ecovat expects sustainable space heating and hot water to remain an important part of future energy needs during the energy transition. This picture is similar in other countries in temperate climate zones. The energy storage and distribution market is therefore one of the most important growth markets in the transition to sustainable energy in Northern and Central Europe, among others.

Ecovat wants to realize 5 projects over the next three years

Growth ambition

Ecovat wants to grow further. That's what Ecovat wants. do it in two ways:

1. Given the current production capacity, Ecovat Holding BV aims to sell and produce five Ecovat systems from the period 2022 to 2025. From 2023, Ecovat Holding BV wants to increase this to four Ecovat systems per year.
Below is the planning of Ecovat Holding BV:

2. From 2025, Ecovat also wants to grant licenses to other implementing parties for the production of Ecovat systems. In this way, the number of Ecovat systems that are realized can continue to grow significantly, regardless of the company's own production capacity (this is the green dotted line in the figure above). The management and maintenance will take place in Ecovat Werk BV. Our own production capacity will not be expanded for this purpose. However, the capacity of Ecovat Services BV (maintenance and software control) will be expanded by a few employees.

Market for new construction

In 2018, Ecovat conducted research into this market between 2019 and 2050.
These are some of Ecovat's key conclusions from this research:

  1. In 2020, the Netherlands will have a total number of homes of 7.600.000. This is expected to grow to 8.300.000 by 2030 and to 8.500.000 by 2050.
  2. In 2020, 1% of the total housing stock will be connected to a heating network. This percentage is expected to grow to 20% in 2030 and 50% in 2050.
  3. The increasing degree of insulation and the associated decrease in heat demand per home is reducing the size of the market (heat demand per home will fall by 2050% between now and 35).
  4. In political thinking and social opinion, the energy transition has accelerated considerably in the past five years and is fully on the agenda. This trend is expected to continue.
