The central government supports the sustainable heating network in the municipality of Peel en Maas by granting PAW

The mayor and aldermen of Peel en Maas decided in October last year to submit an application for the pilot project Natural Gas Free Neighborhoods Program (PAW). This is financial support from the central government for making neighborhoods in their municipality natural gas-free. The council submitted the application for the WarmteKoude Panningen to help citizens make their homes and businesses within its municipality more sustainable. The submitted PAW application has now been granted.

The project
WarmteKoude Panningen is an initiative of GroeneWarmte the developer of heating projects in existing buildings and the local energy cooperative Peel Energie. The two parties want to make an impact and have developed the plan together. Sustainability is achieved with heat pumps, sustainable sources, storage and flexibility. The heat will be used locally to heat homes and buildings. The plan also provides for an energy savings program for citizens and companies in Panningen. Sustainable cooling is also possible in the plan. With the PAW contribution we can make an impact more quickly to insulate the homes and businesses in the 1st natural gas-free plan area of Panningen and make them further sustainable. The next step is the development and rollout of a WarmteKoude network on sustainable heat sources. Part of the financial support is also intended for this.

Cooperation
The initiators have sought cooperation with the municipality of Peel en Maas and the housing association Wonen Limburg. The four parties signed a cooperation agreement in the autumn of 2021. At the request of the initiators, the municipality of Peel en Maas submitted the PAW application to the government at the end of last year and the contribution of approximately € 4 million has now been awarded.

GroeneWarmte
“With this PAW from the national government, we can take the next step in the development and rollout of a WarmteKoude network on sustainable heat sources in the first district of Panningen. By saving energy and using local sustainable sources, we can continue to reduce natural gas consumption in the future. The allocation of the PAW contribution for the project and the development of energy prices makes this initiative increasingly beneficial for all involved”; said Aris de Groot, CEO of GroeneWarmte.
