The mayor and aldermen of Peel en Maas have decided to submit an application for the pilot project Natural Gas Free Neighborhoods Program (PAW). This is financial support from the central government for making neighborhoods natural gas-free. The council submits the application for the Heat | Koudenet Panningen, an initiative of Ecovat and energy cooperative Peel Energie.

In 2020, the Ecovat project presented itself by initiators Peel Energie and Ecovat Projects Holding. Ecovat's concept consists of an underground thermos for both heat and cold storage. With a heating network and additional technology, Ecovat aims to provide homes and buildings with sustainable heat and cold throughout the year, so that they can be disconnected from the natural gas network.

Cooperation
The initiators have sought cooperation with the municipality of Peel en Maas and the housing association Wonen Limburg. The four parties signed a cooperation agreement in the autumn of 2021. They have entered into a collaboration with each other for the submission of a PAW application. The project has been further developed under the name Warmte | Cold-net Panningen. Under this name – or WK Panningen for short – the project plan has now been developed and the PAW application has been submitted.

Next steps
The Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations will announce the selection of the pilot projects in the first quarter of 2022. It will then be known whether Peel en Maas's application has been approved. Upon approval of the application, the
municipality a contribution of a maximum of € 4.000.000.
